Newport’s 8 churches & their bells

On Long Island we lived close to St. Mary’s Episcopal Church which we had attended. They have an electronic carillon housed in the bell tower of the church. We really enjoyed hearing the chimes and music that the carillon made and knew that we would miss hearing St. Mary’s after we moved to NH.

After we moved to Newport we were delighted to hear the sound of a bell chiming from a nearby church. That was cool. Maybe it wouldn’t be like the carillon at our old church but it was a nice sound. Sunday mornings in particular there is a lot of chiming, possible coming from more than one church.

We decided to research how many churches there are in the Town of Newport. It turns out there are eight. That seems like a lot of churches for a town this size, but then again there are a number of different denominations. If you are a religious person and looking for a church home, there are plenty to chose from.

We suspected that the chiming was coming from St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church, or perhaps it is coming from more than one church within hearing distance.

We had to run into town, so we thought let’s make this fun and take photos of the churches and write a post about them. Not all of them have a bell tower as you will see. I have included some contact information which could be useful for anyone looking for a church.

Of course we still don’t know for sure where the chiming is coming from. I guess we’ll just have to get up early on a Sunday morning and check it out. Maybe even go inside some of them!

  1. The United Methodist church bets fits my idea of a true “New England” church, probably because I’m so used to seeing that building style. You’ll find one like it in almost any small New Hampshire town. The United Church of Christ also has a very familiar style. It looks a lot like the one in Swanzey or the one in Peterborough. Good idea for a post. For some reason I thought you lived farther north. I had relatives in Newport years ago.
I hope you weren’t buried by the latest storm!

    1. Thanks Allen. As you know, I’ve just started blogging. I thought about the churches and decided it might be an interesting topic. I have no idea who may read or be interested. I guess the idea is just to write about things that are interesting to me. I do enjoy it. Using WordPress was also something new for me. It does seem like a versatile program.

Newport is a nice town. I like the upper valley. We can get to Manchester and Concord in just about an hour. It is conveniently located to I-91. It’s a good location.

The snow wasn’t too bad. I guess we had about 12 inches. How did you make out. What area are you in?

      1. I don’t know if you’re interested but the way to get more traffic on your blog is to visit and comment on other blogs. There are Word Press blogs on virtually any topic you can think of. As far as what to write on your blog goes, just write about what you love. You’ll find that there are many others out there who love it as well.
Newport is indeed a very nice town. I used to go to rock and mineral shows at Mt. Sunapee and stayed over in Newport one night.
I’m down in Keene / Swanzey, across the river from Brattleboro Vermont, and we ended up with about 6.5 inches. It was wet and heavy, so that was more than enough.

        1. Good advice. You are right, there are blogs on so many topics…interesting.

We have stayed in Keene a few times and visited Lindy’s diner for breakfast on the way back to Long Island. It seems like a lot of politicians have been there when campaigning.
